More About Power Factor

These are the waveforms found at the input of all conventional power supplies found in virtually all electronic equipment. The typical power factor in all cases is 55% to 65%, and THD is over 100 % which means more harmonics are produced than work done. See below for an explanation of THD.

Power Factor and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD)

These graphs show the relationship between power factor and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). Since the relationship is non linear, THD is a much more accurate indication of the amount of harmonics being produced, especially above 98% power factor. COHERENT POWER designs operate with a THD in the 3 to 5 % range when operating with a load of 20% to full load. This corresponds to a power factor of 99.8 to 99.9 %.
